Sun Protection

Everything you need to know about Sun protection and UPF clothing.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin. For example, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate through to your skin.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, UV rays can pass directly through the fibers in most fabrics to reach your skin, putting you at risk for sunburn and other skin damage. UPF fabrics blocks sun ray's thus reducing your exposure risk significantly. Densely woven cloth, like denim, canvas, wool or synthetic fibers, are more protective than sheer, thin or loosely woven cloth. Check a fabric’s sun safety by holding it up to the light. If you can see through, UV radiation can easily penetrate the fabric and reach your skin.

SPF is more commonly known as it is the sun protective rating for sunscreens and other sun protective creams. SPF stands for sun protection factor and the SPF rating which typically varies between 15 and 50 indicates the level of sun protection offered.  UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor and is the sun protective rating for fabrics, most commonly referred to with sun protective clothing. The rating system works the same way as for SPF. The maximum UPF rating that can be awarded is UPF 50+, which blocks at least 98% of UV radiation.

Dermatologists and the skin cancer foundation UPF clothing recommendation agree that the best way to prevent sunburn, skin aging and skin cancer is to wear UPF 50+ sun protective clothing making sure that your skin is not directly exposed to sunlight.

This kind of protection doesn't wash out, but as with special weaves, a fabric's fibers can become distorted over time, making them less effective at screening UV light. Fabric that is old, threadbare or faded will have a lower UPF Factor.

The Seal of Recommendation is given to a variety of products that meet a criteria created by The Skin Cancer Foundation for safe and effective sun protection, when used as directed.

You should always wear sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days up to 80 percent of the sun's rays can pass through clouds, so if you assume it's OK to forgo protection on an overcast day, think again. Sunscreen is an important preventive health care habit that should be maintained all year, including the winter months as part of your daily routine.

Sunscreen protects your skin from UV rays. The depletion of the ozone layer has increased our risk of sun damage from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen blocks these rays, greatly reducing the likelihood of sunburn. By applying sunscreen to exposed areas (not covered by sun protective apparel) each day, you cut your risk of contracting skin cancers in half.

SUN50 is a small company and shipping fees are a critical component for our business.   Shipping charges are a huge expense to us as a small company and we do try to be very transparent about our shipping fees on our website. It is difficult to compete with large online retailers in the shipping world.

Additionally, because we do small-run productions, use sustainable organic fabrics and manufacturer in the USA, (all of which we are incredibly proud of), we do have high costs in production. A great deal of thought goes into our pricing and shipping charges and we often offer free shipping which helps to offset and return fees.
