With the latest recall of sunscreens containing the cancer-causing chemical benzene, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that every sunscreen or sunblock on the market is unhealthy or “toxic.” Before you swear off sunscreen for good, you should know that benzene is not intended to be an ingredient in sunscreen or any personal care products. The US Food & Drug Administration is currently reviewing how the presence of benzene may have occurred in the recalled sunscreens.

Sunscreen and sun protection remain essential when it comes to protecting your skin from harmful UV sun rays, which can lead to skin cancer. Remember, your UV exposure is compounded over your lifetime, less is more. When it comes to UV (Ultraviolet) light there are two types proven to contribute to the risk of skin cancer:

UVA (Ultraviolet A) has a longer wavelength and is associated with

skin aging.

UVB (Ultraviolet B) has a shorter wavelength and is associated

with skin burning.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. There are plenty of safe sunscreens on the market and the American Academy of Dermatology is an excellent resource when it comes to identifying a safe sunscreen option for you.

At Sun50, we do not chemically treat, dip, or dye our fabrics to achieve superior UPF 50+ sun protection, which block 98% of both UVA and UVB rays. We use the airiest, eco-friendly, high quality fabrics, with a tight construction, for natural, all day sun protection and your comfort.

When it comes to UV testing, our fabrics are always third party tested. The test results for each fabric, which meets our UPF 45+ minimum standard, is submitted to The Skin Cancer Foundation for their review. All Sun50 fabrics have received the prestigious Skin Cancer Seal of Recommendation and the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal hangs proudly from the clothing we make.

Sun protective clothing provides the greatest barrier against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, the more skin you cover, the better!  When you wear Sun50 sun protection clothing, you can count on superior quality, the highest level of chemical-free UV protection, and the integrity of our fabric testing.
