Our CEO and Co-Founder, Christie Covarrubias, grew up in California when wearing sunscreen was optional and sunburns were plentiful. Childhood summers were spent on the beaches of Lake Tahoe alongside her cousin Renee catching sun-rays with tanning oil. In her early 30’s, Renee was diagnosed with melanoma, and within 10 months she passed away. Had Renee known about skin cancer prevention and early detection skin exams, she would probably be alive today.
With Renee in mind, Sun50 was launched.
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF), on average, a person's risk for melanoma doubles if one has suffered more than five sunburns. However, the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) says that 9 out of 10 cases are preventable with proper protection. The single most effective form of sun protection is UPF clothing, according to the SCF.
Both the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the SCF recommends wearing clothing that rates at least a UPF 30. At UPF 30, 97% of the suns most harmful (UVB) rays are blocked. While there is no UPF rating that can ever block 100% of the suns UVB rays, all of Sun50’s clothing will be rated at a minimum of UPF 40+. Sun50 fabrics have proudly received The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation for our high-quality UV protection.
In addition to effective protection, there is a distinct lack of UPF clothing available that is fashionable and well-fitted. Our brand features on-trend styles inspired by beach living, that are hand-crafted in Los Angeles, California. Sun50 fabrics are light-weight and soft to the touch. We are sure you will love them.
Your health is important to us. We work with nonprofit organizations that seek to cure and prevent skin cancer. Sun50 will be a resource and support for people affected by skin cancer. You will not be just a customer, but a friend and member of the Sun50 family.
Welcome to our family!
