Re-discovering a Lifelong Passion Led to Success

Re-discovering a Lifelong Passion Led to Success - Sun50

While preparing for our most recent photoshoot, we discovered Meredith Quill Jewelry and fell in love with the beautiful simplicity of her designs and inspiring story. Using her grandmother’s bracelet as the backdrop for her signature pieces, Meredith’s handcrafted jewelry is timeless, elegant and reflects freedom of self-expression no matter the occasion. As an entrepreneur, jewelry designer, wife and self-titled “exhausted mom” of 3 young children, Meredith has transitioned her life-long passion into a successful at-home business.

How did you find your way into jewelry making?

My first experience with jewelry making was when I was 13 years old at an art camp in Connecticut. This led to making tons of sterling silver pieces as a teenager for fun. I was lucky to have a great uncle who was a jeweler and he would let me scour his workshop for scrap materials.

I kind of forgot about my passion for making jewelry until my kids were finally in school full-time. I couldn’t find jewelry I liked at a price point that fit my budget, so I decided to make my own. My friends complimented the pieces I would wear, which encouraged me make jewelry for other women. And my business just grew from there.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from?

I’m mostly inspired by my mom’s antique jewelry collection. I work with a number of different materials depending on the piece I’m creating. My goal is to keep my costs as low as possible, without compromising quality. I use gold vermeil, brass or gold-filled metals where I can. I also love using stones which are less common in mainstream jewelry like onyx, malachite, labradorite, lapis, tourmaline.

How do you make time for yourself? How do you balance family time and career time?

I make time for myself everyday by taking a 2 mile walk around our neighborhood. It is self-care at its best! I’m outside. I’m exercising. I’m not looking at my phone!

I balance family and work time very carefully. My children are 11, 8, and 6, so they still really need me and my full attention. I try to get my work finished while they’re focused on their school work. And I was blessed with good time management skills which really helps, but sometimes the balance doesn’t always work! Work-life balance is a work in progress, especially now when everyone is at home with self isolation.

How do you want women/girls to feel while wearing your jewelry?

I want women and girls to feel like they’re having fun when they wear my jewelry. I think of my collection as classic, but a little edgy. I love when my “mom friends” buy a piece of my jewelry as a little “pick-me-up.” And it’s such a joy when my tween daughter steals jewelry from me because she thinks it’s cool!! To be clear, I’m not cool, but my jewelry is...according to the tween in my house.
