Behind the Sambatra Tote Bag

Our beautiful limited-edition Sambatra Tote, exclusive to Sun50, is a work of art, skillfully hand woven over the course of sixteen hours by Malagasy women. The Malagasy-English translation of “Sambatra” is “happy”. Happiness is a universal emotion that triggers a chain of positivity when passed from one person to another.

Sun50 is proud to partner with Jenny, a young Malagasy entrepreneur, who was inspired to lead a fair trade company. She launched her business to help women artisans who have no formal education transform their skills into beautiful products, while also preserving their culture. Empowered by the sale of each tote, these artisans are able to provide for their families.

Prior to crafting these totes, most of the artisans earned less than one dollar per day. Through this enterprise, they have access to a sustainable source of income and skill development opportunities.
